From Opera to Symphonic Poem: Zandonai's Rewriting of the Danza del torchio
Paper presented at the Fifth International Conference of the Centro Internazionale di Studi "Riccardo Zandonai", in collaboration with the Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati, Rovereto (TN).
Abstract
When a composer extracts a piece originally created for a specific genre — such as opera — and transfers it to another with different form and rules — such as the symphonic poem — he faces choices and sacrifices, as well as additions and gains. By comparing the two scores, Danza del torchio and Cavalcata, Symphonic Episode for Orchestra from Romeo e Giulietta, this paper investigates the features of rewriting and translation (from Latin trans-ducĕre, to bring across, to transport) that Zandonai undertook in moving from opera to the symphonic medium. The analysis examines form and orchestration, and inquires how Zandonai treated the absence of voices.
