Before and After Butterfly
Fantasia III — the third attempt at a piece that twice failed to find its form — takes as its starting point the opening two bars of Act II of Puccini's Madama Butterfly. The question was simple: what might have existed before those bars, and what might come after? The piece is built around that gap — not a commentary on Puccini, but an exploration of the space his music opens and then closes.
The work received its premiere on 12 October 2012, performed by Omar Flavio Careddu (cello) and Margherita Berlanda (accordion) at the Mondi Sonori XV edition, concert Ultime Generazioni, Auditorium di Musica F.A. Bonporti, Trento.
