Pilot's Eyes
Occhi da Pilota is the winning story of the 2022–2023 Ateneo dei Racconti literary prize, awarded by Opera Universitaria di Trento. Written by Jacopo Endrizzi, it is narrated by a child with extraordinary eyesight — "undici decimi, occhi da pilota" — who spends an afternoon flying a kite and repairing it with his brother Gabriele, while waiting for news of a father away at war. The story ends where it has always been heading, without ever saying so directly.
Each year the prize-winning story is presented in a public reading with live musical accompaniment. In 2023 Michele Callà was commissioned to compose the score. The staging was directed by Guido Laino, who also curated the live illustration projected in real time during the reading. The musical structure — cuts, silences, entries — was developed in dialogue with the direction, though all compositional choices remained with the composer.
The work received its premiere on 20 April 2023 at Teatro Sanbapolis, Trento.
