The Small Within the Small
Micro Toys was conceived as a self-contained work for radio, composed for the Microtopies call at Ràdio GTS. Over the continuous ticking of a pendulum clock, the piece weaves together materials from two earlier works: elements of the acousmatic piece Toys and a brief excerpt of the toy piano from the theatre production Puttana. The hour chime brings the work to a close: heard first in reverse, then set against its unaltered form, like time flowing backwards before falling back into step.
Miniaturisation here is not a mere reduction in length. The sound-toy and the clockwork mechanism, small and domestic objects by definition, find their natural dimension in the reduced scale of the radio format: every acoustic gesture takes on a weight that a longer span would disperse, and radio, the medium of pure time and of close listening, becomes the ideal resonating chamber for sounds that measure, reverse and reassemble time itself.
